Tucked into the green Lima valley, Bagni di Lucca is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets. Once a fashionable spa town loved by European aristocrats and English poets, today it is a peaceful place of rivers, chestnut woods and quiet villages, just a few minutes from Stalla di Guzzano.
1. Relax in the thermal waters
Bagni di Lucca has been famous for its warm, mineral-rich springs since medieval times. The historic thermal spa offers natural steam grottoes and treatments, a lovely way to unwind after a day of exploring.
2. Cross the Ponte delle Catene
This elegant iron chain bridge over the River Lima dates from the 1840s and was one of the first of its kind in Italy. It is a beautiful spot for a gentle walk and a photo, especially in the soft light of early evening.
3. Follow in the footsteps of the poets
In the 19th century, Bagni di Lucca attracted writers and artists from across Europe, including Shelley, Byron and the Brownings. Wander past the grand old villas, the historic casino building and the little English cemetery, and you can still sense the town's romantic past.
4. See the Devil's Bridge
A short drive down the valley at Borgo a Mozzano, the medieval Ponte della Maddalena arches dramatically over the River Serchio. Local legend says it was built with the help of the devil himself, which is how it earned its nickname.
5. Walk the hills and gorges
The countryside around Bagni di Lucca is made for walking, with old mule tracks, chestnut forests and hilltop hamlets. For something wilder, the Orrido di Botri nature reserve offers a spectacular limestone gorge in the summer months.
6. Discover the Garfagnana
Head north into the Garfagnana for medieval towns such as Barga and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, mountain views, local markets and hearty food, including farro and chestnut flour dishes.
7. Spend a day in Lucca
Just a short drive away, Lucca is one of Tuscany's most charming cities. Hire a bike and cycle along the Renaissance walls, explore the oval Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and stop for gelato in the narrow streets of the old town.
8. Head to the Versilia coast
When the summer heat calls for the sea, drive towards the Versilia coast for long sandy beaches backed by the Apuan Alps. Stroll the seafront promenade in Viareggio, browse the boutiques of Forte dei Marmi or simply rent a sunbed for the day at one of the traditional beach clubs, then drive back to the cool of the hills for dinner.
9. Visit Pisa
Pisa is an easy day trip from Bagni di Lucca. Of course you will want to see the famous Leaning Tower, but take time to explore the whole Piazza dei Miracoli, with its marble cathedral and baptistery, then wander along the River Arno and through the lively university streets for lunch.
10. Spend a day in Florence
The birthplace of the Renaissance is within reach for a day out. Take the train from Lucca and spend the day admiring Brunelleschi's dome, the Ponte Vecchio and the treasures of the Uffizi Gallery. Book museum tickets in advance, and save time for a sunset view from Piazzale Michelangelo before heading back to the peace of the hills.
