To Tip or Not to Tip in Italy

It is one of the questions our guests ask most: should you tip in Italy? The short answer is that tipping is welcome but not expected in the way it is in some other countries. Here is a simple guide, so you can relax and enjoy your meal like a local.

Restaurants and trattorias

In Italy, waiting staff are paid a proper wage, so a large tip is not part of the bill. You will often see a small coperto (cover charge) per person on your receipt, which covers the bread and table setting. Some restaurants also add servizio (service), especially in cities and tourist areas, so check the bill before you leave anything extra.

  • Good service: rounding up the bill or leaving a few euros is a kind gesture.
  • Exceptional service: around 5 to 10% is generous and always appreciated.
  • Leave it in cash where you can, as tips added to a card payment don't always reach the staff.

Coffee at the bar

Italians drink their espresso standing at the counter, quickly and without fuss. There is no need to tip, but leaving a few coins of change on the saucer is a nice touch if you become a regular.

Taxis, drivers and guides

  • Taxis: simply round up to the nearest euro or two.
  • Private drivers and tour guides: a tip of around 10% for a full day is a lovely way to say thank you.
  • Hotel porters: a euro or two per bag is plenty.

A few local tips

  • Ask for the bill. In Italy it is polite not to rush guests, so the bill won't arrive until you ask: "Il conto, per favore."
  • Carry some cash. Smaller trattorias and village bars in the hills around Bagni di Lucca may prefer cash.
  • A warm "grazie" goes a long way. Kindness and a few words of Italian are always appreciated.
